Colon Hydrotherapy (Colonics)

One of the best-selling offerings at Phuket detox resorts — and the one that the most credible medical sources agree most clearly has no scientific support.

What it is

Colon hydrotherapy (colonics, colon cleanse) is the flushing of the large intestine with warm water or herbal solutions via the rectum, typically lasting 30–60 minutes per session. Providers claim it will “detoxify” and improve overall health.

Available in Phuket at Atmanjai Wellness Centre (Rawai, beachfront — TripAdvisor 4.5/5, 630+ reviews) and Phuket Cleanse, as well as specialist detox studios in the Kata/Rawai area.

What the evidence actually says

Harvard Health, Cleveland Clinic and Time (2026) hold the same position — we cite all three separately because this is a consensus from independent sources:

✗ No scientific evidence
Harvard Health, Cleveland Clinic and Time (2026) agree: there is no strong scientific evidence supporting the claimed benefits for routine wellness use.
✗ Premise contradicts physiology
The idea that the body needs to “detoxify” through the colon contradicts basic physiology — the liver and kidneys already remove waste, and do so far more effectively.
⚠ Real documented risks
Risks recorded in the medical literature:
  • — Dehydration
  • — Electrolyte imbalance (cardiac risk)
  • — Infection from unsterile equipment
  • — Bowel perforation (rare but documented)

A note on Atmanjai

Atmanjai Wellness Centre uses the protocol of Dr. Bernard Jensen — Jensen was a historically prominent naturopath, but his methods are traditional practice, not evidence-based medicine by current standards.

Atmanjai holds a TripAdvisor rating of 4.5/5 from 630+ reviews — which tells you the experience people receive is good. It does not validate the therapeutic claims. Selene separates quality of experience from therapeutic claims.

Price in Phuket

We have no confirmed standalone colon hydrotherapy session pricing. Both Atmanjai and Phuket Cleanse include colonics in programme packages, but pricing is not itemised in any public source we can access.

Who should clearly avoid this

  • — People with bowel conditions (Crohn's, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis)
  • — Recent abdominal surgery
  • — Pregnancy
  • — Cardiac or kidney conditions
  • — Severe haemorrhoids or bowel ulceration

If you are considering colon hydrotherapy, consult a physician first and ask explicitly about equipment sterilisation standards.

What we do not yet know

  • — Equipment sterilisation standards at individual venues in Phuket — no public data. This is the primary risk.
  • — Confirmed standalone session pricing — we have no verified data
  • — Whether any specific population subgroup may benefit — the medical literature does not identify one

Important note: this guide concerns colon hydrotherapy specifically — distinct from fasting programmes, which have metabolic-level evidence. Many resorts sell both in a single programme, but the evidence sits entirely apart. See Fasting & Longevity guide for the separate assessment.
